Wabash Holds Off Men's Basketball

Junior guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) sank a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within a single point after the Bishops had trailed by 15, but Wabash withstood a pair of second-half comebacks on the way to a North Coast Atlantic Conference win on Wednesday in Crawfordsville, Ind.

The Little Giants got early 3-pointers from Vinny Buccilla and Rich Brooks on the way to an early 8-2 lead, and the hosts connected from downtown 4 more times en route to a 24-14 lead at the 13:22 mark.  Wabash would stretch the margin to 35-20 on another Buccilla 3-pointer with 5:32 to play in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied with 3-pointers from fifth-year post Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name), senior post Phil Wallace (Akron/Norton), and senior guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) while paring the deficit to 42-35, and the Bishops continued their comeback early in the second half, with Carter and Hinkle doing the long-distance dialing to pull the Bishops within 46-44 before Ward's 3-pointer made it a 50-49 game with 15:28 to play.

Wabash countered with an 11-0 run that included 3-pointers on 3 consecutive possessions, with Buccilla, Robert Sorenson
, and Keegan Manowitz hitting trifectas, and the hosts still led by a dozen after a Buccilla lay-in with 2:51 left.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied behind a Hinkle lay-in and 3-pointers from Ward and Hinkle, bringing the Bishops within 80-74 with 1:08 remaining, but Nate Matelic and Josh Whack each sank a pair of free throws for Wabash for the 84-74 final.

Hinkle led the Bishops with 24 points.  Carter collected 14 points and Wallace finished with 10 points and team bests of 7 rebounds and 7 assists.
