DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team kicked off conference play in commanding fashion with a 9-0 victory over Transylvania on Wednesday. The Bishop offense wasted no time, building a 3-0 lead before the 10th minute and adding insurance goals the rest of the way. Defensively, the Bishops were equally strong, holding Transylvania to just one shot on the night.
OWU evens its record to 2-2, while Transylvania continues to search for its first win, falling to 0-3.
Mary Powers put OWU on the board in the third minute off an assist by
Emma Wright. Wright followed with a goal of her own in the eighth minute, extending the lead to 2-0. Less than a minute later, freshman Zoë Smith secured her first collegiate goal and points as she found the back of the net via penalty stroke.
Powers would add her second of the game in the 14th minute building a commanding 4-0 lead. In the 19th minute,
Grace Ammon would kick off a career night, scoring the first of what would be a career-high three goals for the junior. One minute later, Smith would be called upon once more for a penalty stroke, and deliver, extending the lead to 6-0.
In the 23rd minute, Ammon would tally her second goal of the night, with more to come. Sophomore
Maddie Federico tacked on another goal for the Red and Black in the 26th minute off an assist from
Morgan Leeper. Leeper notched her first collegiate point. Ammon struck once more in the 28th minute, giving her a hat trick, the first of her career.
The Bishops scoring party would slow after the 28th minute, leaving the final scoreline at 9-0.
THE NUMBERS
The Bishops were all offense, outshooting the Pioneers 25-1, including a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Grace Ammon's hat trick brings her season total to four goals and eight points.
Zoë Smith and
Mary Powers account for two goals and four points apiece.
Emma Wright contributed a goal and assist, tallying three points for the night.
Maddie Federico notched one goal.
Avery Slucher and
Morgan Leeper each recorded an assist.
OWU earned five penalty corners compared to Transylvania's one.
Peyton Mindel (2-2) got the start, playing the first three quarters and securing her second win of the season. She made one save.
Jane Shields played the final quarter, making her collegiate debut.
