DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team hosted Washington & Jefferson Tuesday afternoon for a North Coast Athletic Conference showdown. The Battling Bishops took control early, opening the scoring in the 10th minute en route to a decisive 9-0 victory.
OWU moves to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. W&J drops to 3-4 with a 1-1 conference record.
Junior
Brogan Heilig put the Bishops on the board in the 10th minute, netting what would be the first of her two goals on the night. Less than two minutes later,
Mary Powers found the back of the cage off an assist from
Mattison Hyland. Hyland continued to set up her teammates, as she assisted
Emma Wright in the 16th minute, and the Bishops quickly built a 3-0 lead.
The 19th minute saw Powers strike again, burying her second goal of the match. Freshman
Violette Alcantar recorded her first collegiate goal and points in the 27th minute, as she buried a shot following an assist from
Quinn Dachisen.
Grace Ammon continued OWU's scoring spree after halftime, firing a shot in the 38th minute and bolstering the lead to 6-0. In the 44th minute,
Mattison Hyland continued her impressive night, as she acrobatically dribbled past the goalie and notched a goal of her own. 44 seconds later, Heilig netted her second goal, courtesy of an assist from Ammon. Sophomore
Paige Buchness tallied her first collegiate goal and points in the 51st minute, as she was set up by Ammon once more.
The Red and Black were dominant on the defensive side, as a front anchored by
Emma Morgeson,
Katie Conway, and
Catherine Kent propelled the Bishops to their second shutout.
THE NUMBERS
OWU outshot Washington & Jefferson 25-7, including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bishops earned eight penalty corners to the Presidents' three.
Brogan Heilig and
Mary Powers led the offense with two goals and four points apiece. Powers brings her season points total to a team-leading 13, Heilig to eight.
Mattison Hyland,
Grace Ammon, and
Emma Wright all notched one goal.
Violette Alcantar and
Paige Buchness each tallied their first career goal.
Ammon, Hyland and Dachisen accounted for five Bishop assists.
Payton Mindel (3-3) got the start, playing the first half and securing her third win of the season. Freshman
Jane Shields got the nod for the second half, recording her first career save, and then some. She would finish the night with four impressive saves.
