Four Bishops Score as Field Hockey Flies Away with Home-Opener against Centre

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team opened up their home schedule with a decisive 6-1 victory over Centre. OWU found the cage in every period, applying steady pressure despite facing a quality Centre team. Defensively, the Bishops were equally strong, holding the Colonels without a shot until the third period.

OWU advances to 1-2 on the new season, handing Centre their first loss of the season, now 3-1.

The Bishops struck first in the 15th minute via a penalty corner goal by Grace Ammon, assisted by Mary Powers. Brogan Heilig was next to find the back of the net for the Red and Black, striking in the 28th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Ohio Wesleyan added two more in the third quarter, starting with a 38th-minute goal by Mary Powers off of an assist from Emma Wright. Heilig then added her second of the game at the 42-minute mark for a four-goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

The fourth quarter started quickly as OWU added a fifth goal just 57 seconds in. It was Powers scoring her second with an assist from Ava Zimmer. Finally, Zimmer netted her own in the 54th minute to finish off the scoring for the Bishops. Centre avoided the shutout with a goal in the 57th minute, leaving the final scoreline at 6-1.

THE NUMBERS
The Bishops were all offense, outshooting the Colonels 39-7, including a 20-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Mary Powers and Brogan Heilig each scored twice, their first goals of the season. Powers also had an assist, giving her five points.

Grace Ammon and Ava Zimmer both opened their season accounts with one goal apiece. Zimmer added an assist to tally three points.

OWU earned nine penalty corners compared to Centre's three.

Peyton Mindel (1-2) got the start and played the full 60 minutes, tallying her first collegiate victory in goal.
