Bishops Drop Pair to ONU and Alma

ADA, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University softball team wrapped up play at the ONU Invitational on Sunday afternoon, facing hosts Ohio Northern as well as Alma. The Battling Bishops suffered losses in both games, losing 6-2 to ONU and 7-2 to Alma.

Ohio Wesleyan now sits at 4-10 on the season.

GAME ONE: OHIO WESLEYAN 2, OHIO NORTHERN 6
Ohio Northern nabbed an early 2-0 lead in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first. Ohio Wesleyan narrowed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning with a Caity Journey single to center that scored Sylvie Devore. Devore was pinch running for Jessie Spurling after a single to left center, moving around the bases on a steal and a wild pitch.

The Battling Bishops went on to tie the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of singles from Journey and Liv Yeary, and a pair of productive outs from Kennedy Dean and Chameron Vanden Eynden. Vanden Eynden got the RBI, driving in Lexi Stratton who was pinch running for Journey.

ONU broke the tie with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth, making it 6-2. That would end up being the final scoreline as the Red and Black were unable to get any runs across for the remainder of the game.

Shelby Morris (0-1) got the start and pitched the first four innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks in the losing decision. Ryla Zehring offered relief for the final two innings, keeping the Polar Bears scoreless on just two hits.

Journey was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Yeary was 2-for-3 with a double. Dean was 1-for-2. Vanden Eynden had an RBI. Devore and Stratton scored the two runs.

GAME TWO: OHIO WESLEYAN 2, ALMA 7
The Battling Bishops jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings of game two, scoring one run each. In the first, Chameron Vanden Eynden singled to left center and came around to score after a Rylee Myers single and two productive outs from Caity Journey and Jessie Spurling. In the second, Rylea Gist reached on a walk, ultimately scoring on a Liv Yeary single to center after being moved to second on a throwing error.

Unfortunately, that was it for the OWU offense in the game. Alma managed to score seven runs in the remainder of the game with two in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the seventh, leading to a 7-2 result.

Olivia Basil (1-4) went the whole way on the mound, punching out a career-high eight batters but allowing four earned runs on eight hits and 10 walks.

Yeary was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Spurling had an RBI. Vanden Eynden and Myers both went 2-for-4, with Vanden Eynden also scoring a run. Journey was 1-for-3. Rylea Gist scored the remaining run.
