Bishops Drop NCAC-Openers at No. 23 DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Ohio Wesleyan University softball team opened conference play on Saturday with a pair of games at No. 23 DePauw. The Battling Bishops were ultimately outmatched in both contests, scoring just one run all day and falling 10-0 and 10-1.

OWU drops to 4-12 on the season, and 0-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. DePauw advances to 12-6, with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

GAME ONE: OHIO WESLEYAN 0, DePAUW 10
DePauw struck first in the bottom half of the first inning after a two-run double followed by a wild pitch plated three Tigers. The conference rivals extended their lead in the second, as a pair of errors brought two more runners across. Moments later, an RBI-double and throwing error made it 7-0.

The Red and Black held DePauw scoreless in the third, the only frame in which they were able to contain the Tigers. Ohio Wesleyan threatened for the first time in the top of the fourth, as Jessie Spurling and Lexi Stratton sat on second and third with two away. However, the rally ultimately stalled there.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Tigers strung together three hits, resulting in three runs to give their squad a 10-0 advantage. The Bishops were unable to respond in the top of the fifth, enforcing the run rule.

Olivia Basil (L, 1-5) got the start in the circle, going 1.1 innings and striking out three. Shelby Morris finished the game, throwing the final 2.2 innings and punching out one.

OWU recorded just three hits in the opening game.

Rylea Gist and Jessie Spurling both finished 1-for-2.

Chameron Vanden Eynden went 1-for-3.

GAME TWO: OHIO WESLEYAN 1, DePAUW 10
DePauw's offensive outburst carried into game two. After a scoreless top of the first from OWU, the Tigers poured in six runs on four hits and one error. The surge continued in the second, as four hits allowed four more Tigers to score and make it 10-0.  Ohio Wesleyan was held hitless over the next two innings.

In the fifth, Kelsey Shiley led off the inning with a single through the left side. Lexi Stratton was brought on to pinch run, but was ultimately thrown out on a steal attempt. Megan Tooill revived the rally with a two-strike base hit to center field. Two batters later, Katie Enneking put the Bishops on the board by driving in Caitlin Aleshire, who was pinch-running for Tooill. However, the late run was not enough to keep Ohio Wesleyan in the contest, as the run rule was enforced again. OWU drops game two, 10-1.

Makenna Knisley (L, 1-3) got the start in game two, going 1.2 innings and striking out one. Shelby Morris relieved Knisley, tossing 0.1 innings. Emma Dahlstrom finished the game, throwing the final 2.0 innings.

Jessie Spurling, Shiley and Tooill all finished the game 1-for-2.

Enneking went 1-for-1 and recorded the Bishops' lone RBI.

Aleshire tallied her first collegiate run scored.
