GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Ohio Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team traveled across state lines to meet up with DePauw on Wednesday night. The Tigers held a slight edge throughout the majority of the contest, but a late four-goal run was enough to put the Battling Bishops ahead in the end, 14-13.
The Red and Black climb to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, challenging for the three-seed with just over a week-and-a-half left in the regular season. DePauw drops to 6-8 overall, also 2-2 in conference play.
The Bishops struck first thanks to a
Brie Colangelo goal about two minutes in, kicking off what would be a 3-3 quarter.
Emma Reynolds and
Sam Frary scored the other two for the Bishops after two goals from the Tigers. DePauw tied it up to end the first quarter with 26 seconds remaining.
The Tigers eventually took the advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Ohio Wesleyan 6-4. OWU's goals were spread throughout the period, with Tiffany Trihn tallying the first, followed by
Lila Hall, then two back-to-back by Colangelo right before the half. This made it 9-7 in favor of DePauw at the break.
The second half started the same way as the first: with three goals per side in the third quarter. Trihn netted the first for the Bishops in the period before DePauw extended their lead to four at 12-8. Luckily, a pair of goals by
Sam Frary and
Jackie Harper with less than a minute-and-a-half remaining made the deficit much more manageable at 12-10 entering the final 15 minutes.
The Battling Bishops kept the Tigers to just one goal in the fourth quarter, allowing the period opener to make it 13-10. The rest of the period was all OWU with the Red and Black coming back on a four-goal run to steal the game courtesy of Frary,
Julia Kingsly, Hall, and Trinh. Ohio Wesleyan scored 14th and game-winning goal with just under four minutes left, prompting the Bishops' defense to stand strong and secure the 14-13 victory.
