WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (1-0, 0-0 NCAC) opened up the 2026 season with a 4-0 win at Lycoming (0-1, 0-0 Landmark) on Tuesday night. The Battling Bishops tallied a 3-0 advantage before a lengthy weather delay at the half, scoring one more in the fourth before the game was ultimately called due to lighting.
OWU was on the offensive end from the very beginning, getting off nine shots in the first 15 minutes.
Emma Reynolds finally broke through in the 12th minute for the first goal of the game and the season, assisted by
Morgan Leeper.
The second quarter saw more of the same as the Battling Bishops piled on with 10 more attempts and two more goals. The first of the period came in the 18th minute courtesy of
Grace Ammon, assisted by
Mary Powers. Powers recorded a second assist about 10 minutes later as
Mattison Hyland landed the second goal of the quarter in the back of the net to give Ohio Wesleyan a three-goal cushion at the halftime break.
The weather took center stage during the break, forcing the teams to stay inside for almost two hours. The Bishops did not miss a beat when the weather finally broke, hammering away again on the offensive end with eight more attempts, ultimately coming away empty-handed.
The Battling Bishops ended up breaking through again in the constrained fourth quarter, as Powers finally got on the scoring end of a goal. It came just 1:32 into the quarter assisted by
Violette Alcantar. Less than two minutes later, the game was called at 4-0 due to a reappearance of lightning.
THE NUMBERS
The offensive scale tilted heavily in Ohio Wesleyan's direction with a 28-2 lead in shots and a 23-1 lead in shots on goal. OWU was awarded 19 penalty corners and allowed just one on the other end. The Red and Black coaxed the Lycoming keeper into making 19 saves.
Mary Powers pushed ahead to an early points lead for the season, collecting four on one goal and two assists.
Grace Ammon,
Mattison Hyland, and
Emma Reynolds scored a goal a piece, all collecting two points.
Violette Alcantar and
Morgan Leeper provided an assist each, both collecting one point.
Payton Mindel (1-0) had a relatively quiet day in the cage, playing 48:41 and facing just two shots. She kept a clean sheet with a save against the only shot Lycoming managed to put on target.
