DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (2-0, 0-0 NCAC) continued their winning ways on Saturday morning in their home opener against Marian (0-1, 0-0 CFHC). Junior forward
Reagan Shifflett led the Battling Bishops to an 8-2 victory with a career day, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists for seven points.
The first 16 minutes were quite competitive as the two sides traded blows. OWU opened the scoring in the fourth minute thanks to a goal by
Mattison Hyland. Marian then evened the score in the seventh minute before the Bishops bounced back ahead in the 10th.
Mary Powers scored the second for the Red and Black, benefiting from Shifflett's first assist of the day and giving Ohio Wesleyan a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Sabres opened the second quarter with another equalizer just 36 seconds in. From then on out it was all Battling Bishops with six straight goals to end the action. Shifflett got the run started with a solo goal in the 27th minute.
Violette Alcantar tacked on another just before halftime, making it 4-2.
The third quarter saw the Bishops put two more in the back of the net to extend their lead to 6-2.
Emmerson Crist tallied her first career goal in the 37th minute, followed by
Ava Zimmer recording her first of the season in the 39th. Shifflett assisted on both goals.
OWU would add another two in the fourth quarter, bringing the final score 8-2.
Grace Ammon scored the first unassisted in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later, Shifflett scored her second of the game just two minutes later in the 54th, bringing her final point total to a career-high seven.
THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan was on the offensive most of the morning, taking 27 shots and putting 19 on target. Marian managed nine shots, putting four on target. The Bishops were award 14 penalty corners in comparison to two for the Sabres.
Reagan Shiflett set new career highs for points with seven and assists with three, and tied her career high of two goals. She moves into the team lead for points and assists, and joins the tie for the team lead in goals.
Mary Powers,
Mattison Hyland, and
Grace Ammon all scored their second goals of the season. Powers now has six points on the year while Ammon and Hyland both have four.
Violette Alcantar scored her first goal of the season. She now has four points.
Emmerson Crist tallied her first career goal and her first two career points.
Ava Zimmer recorded her first goal of the year.
Payton Mindel (2-0) made the start and played the first 53:38 with two saves.
Jane Shields subbed in for the final 6:22 and was unbothered in goal.
