HOLLAND, Mich. – The Ohio Wesleyan University volleyball team (1-4, 0-0 NCAC) played their first of three games in the NCAC/MIAA Crossover hosted by Hope on Friday, going up against 15th-ranked Calvin (3-1, 0-0 MIAA). In the end, the Battling Bishops would fall in straight sets.
OWU kept up with the Knights in the early going of set one to stay tied at 6-6 after 12 points. Calvin then broke away on an 11-2 run to take a 17-8 lead. The Bishops responded with a 6-0 run to bring it back within three at 17-14, followed by another 4-0 run a few points later to decrease the deficit down to two at 22-20. Unfortunately that was as close as OWU would get with the Knights taking a 25-21 victory.
Calvin took firm control of the match in set two with a 25-17 win. Ohio Wesleyan attempted to move back within striking distance in set three, starting with a 10-7 lead after a 7-1 run. The Knights soon retook the advantage with a 7-1 run of their own, taking the set to 14-11. Calvin continued to gain separation with another 7-0 run that made it 21-13. The Bishops then battled back to within one at 23-22 after a 9-2 run before the Knights ultimately ended the set at and the match with two straight points.
THE NUMBERS
Natalie Dieball led the Bishops with 12 of the team's 29 kills.
Jordanne Shannon followed with five alongside
Megan Lantis with three.
The Red and Black recorded four service aces. Dieball tallied two while
Avery Krause and
Maggi Wall each had one.
Shannon and
Ella Vansteenkiste led the defensive front with three blocks apiece.
Jaelyn Taylor was the leading setter with 12 assists.
Jenna Ashbrook collected eight.
Krause tallied a team-high 10 digs, followed by Dieball with seven, and Lantis with six.
