GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (4-1, 1-0 NCAC) played the first of two weekend games in New York on Saturday, facing off with William Smith (2-2, 0-0 Liberty).
Mattison Hyland played hero for the Battling Bishops with a goal in the fifth minute of overtime to lift OWU over the Herons 3-2.
The Bishops put one on the board early as
Mary Powers scored in just the third minute, assisted by
Susie Benincasa. Powers added another in the second quarter at the 25-minute mark to give the Red and Black a 2-0 advantage heading into the half.
William Smith worked their way back into the game in the second half by holding Ohio Wesleyan to just one shot. The Herons had seven shots of their own in the latter 30 minutes of the game, two of which found the back of the net. The first came in the 33rd minute while the other happened in the waning moments in the 58th.
Tied at 2-2 after regulation, the two sides battled it out for 4:08 before the Bishops put away the sudden-victory goal. Hyland landed the goal unassisted in the fifth minute of overtime.
THE NUMBERS
The Red and Black took 12 shots and put eight on target. William Smith took 13 shots and also put eight on target. OWU was awarded five penalty corners. The Herons received seven corners. The Battling Bishops made six saves. William Smith made five saves.
Mary Powers put away her sixth and seventh goals of the season. She extends her season points lead to seven with 17 total.
Mattison Hyland netted her third goal of the season with the game-winner in overtime. She now has six points.
Susie Benincasa recorded her first assist of the season.
Payton Mindel (4-1) made six saves in the win.
