GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (5-1, 1-0 NCAC) con\cluded their trip to New York on Sunday morning against St. Lawrence (3-2, 0-0 Liberty). It was a historic day for the Battling Bishops as senior midfielder
Grace Ammon became the new OWU career assists record-holder after two on the day. Junior midfielder
Emma Reynolds netted a hat trick to lead the Bishops to a 6-3 victory over the Saints.
St. Lawrence took an early lead with a goal in the third minute. Ohio Wesleyan evened the score before the end of the first quarter thanks to the first of the day from Reynolds in the 12th minute.
Mattison Hyland started the second quarter with a second goal for OWU in the 17th minute, assisted by
Susie Benincasa. Reynolds netted her second of the game a few minutes later in the 21st off of Ammon's first assist of the day. The Saints took one back just before the half to make it 3-2 at the break.
The third quarter was a quiet one on the scoreboard as the Battling Bishops were left empty handed despite seven shots. The only scoring action in the period came with six seconds left as St. Lawrence drew even at 3-3.
The Bishops more than made up for the lack of activity in the third quarter with three goals in the fourth, coming off of just four shots. Hyland started it off early with her second of the game in the 47th minute on the receiving end of Ammon's record-breaking second assist of the day. Reynolds then completed her hat trick two minutes later in the 49th.
Mary Powers scored for good measure in the 57th, bringing the final score to 6-3.
THE NUMBERS
The Red and Black took 18 shots and put 11 on target. St. Lawrence took six shots and put five on target. OWU was awarded 10 penalty corners and did not concede one on the other end.
Grace Ammon notched two assists to give her a career total of 26, breaking the OWU record of 25 set by Lesley Hendershott from 1986-89. She is now tied for second on the team with 10 points on the season.
Emma Reynolds netted her first career hat trick and finished with a career-high six points. She moves up to third on the team with nine points on the year.
Mattison Hyland scored twice, moving her into the tie for second on the team with 10 points on the season.
Mary Powers scored once to extend her season points lead with a total of 19.
Susie Benincasa made her second assist of the year.
Payton Mindel (5-1) made one save during her 60 minutes in the cage.
Annabel Fauver made one defensive save.
UP NEXT
Ohio Wesleyan heads to Danville, Kentucky next weekend for another two-game set. The Bishops will play Rhodes on Saturday followed by Centre on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
