DANVILLE, Ky. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (6-1, 1-0 NCAC) played Rhodes (4-1, 0-0 CFCH) on Saturday afternoon in the first of two weekend games at Centre College. OWU took a 2-0 lead in the first three quarters, however Rhodes managed to even the score in the fourth. Nevertheless, the Bishops were able to take home the 3-2 win in double overtime thanks to a 71st-minute game-winner by senior midfielder
Grace Ammon.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Battling Bishops revved up their energy for the second period with their first goal in the 18th minute by Emma Renyolds to take a 1-0 lead that they would hold into halftime.
The Bishops doubled their lead in the 42nd minute with a goal by
Susie Benincasa to make the score 2-0 before the close of the third quarter.
Not ready to accept defeat, Rhodes managed to put up two back-to-back goals during the fourth quarter while holding OWU scoreless. The first goal was during the 47th minute followed by the second in the 50th minute. The 2-2 tie would not be settled in regulation, instead needing not one but two overtime periods.
The Battling Bishops put the pressure on with three shots in the first overtime period, followed by two in the second. The golden goal came off of that second shot in the second, off the stick of Ammon and into the back of the net for the 3-2 victory.
THE NUMBERS
The Red and Black took 11 shots with nine of them on goal. Rhodes had 14 shots, also with nine on goal. OWU and Rhodes were each awarded five penalty corners. The Bishops made seven saves compared to the Lynx's six.
Grace Ammon netted her second game-winner of the season. She now has four goals on the year and 12 points.
Emma Reynolds recorded her fifth goal of the season. She now has 11 points.
Susie Benincasa scored her first goal of the year, taking her points total to four.
Payton Mindel (6-1) had a total of seven saves in her 72 minutes in the cage.
