DANVILLE, Ky. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (7-1, 1-0 NCAC) wrapped up their weekend in Kentucky with a game against host team Centre (3-3, 0-0 CFCH) on Sunday afternoon. The Red and Black extended their winning streak to five games, managing at least one goal every quarter and holding Centre scoreless for a dominating 5-0 win.
OWU kicked off the first quarter with two shots right out of the gate followed by an immediate goal in the third minute by Reagan Shiftlett to go up 1-0. The Bishops expanded their lead in the second quarter with back-to-back goals by
Violette Alcantar to bookend the period – one in the 16th minute and one in the 29th minute – and take a 3-0 into halftime.
Centre pressed forward at the start of the third with a string of five attacks but Ohio Wesleyan's defense stood strong – anchored by three saves by
Payton Mindel – and kept the Colonels scoreless. OWU pulled the reverse card to score another goal courtesy of
Ava Zimmer in the 42nd minute and close out the third quarter up 4-0.
Nova Dekker made it five in the fourth quarter with an assist from
Izzy Fry in the 56th minute. The Bishops shut down Centre once again in the final 15 minutes to complete the 5-0 shutout.
THE NUMBERS
The Battling Bishops were incredibly accurate with a season-high 95.5% shot on goal percentage, putting 21 of their 22 shots on target. The Colonels had nine shots with six on goal. OWU had six corners opposed to Centre's one. The Bishops made six saves and prompted 16 on the other end.
Violette Alcantar led the Red and Black with two goals, bringing her season total to four. She now has nine points.
Reagan Shifflett scored the first goal of the game, being her fourth goal of the season. She moves into a tie for second on the Bishops in points with 12.
Nova Dekker scored her second goal of the year. She now has four points.
Izzy Fry recorded her first career assist and her first career point.
Ava Zimmer recorded her third goal of the season. She now has six points on the year.
Payton Mindel (7-1) got the start and played the first 42:47, making two saves with four shots faced.
Elizabeth Aguirre made her third appearance of the season and played the final 17:13, making two saves with two shots faced.
