GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Ohio Wesleyan University football team (1-2, 0-2 NCAC) traveled across state lines on Saturday for a road meeting with 25th-ranked DePauw. The Battling Bishops started strong, holding multiple first-half leads, but the Tigers eventually caught up and held the Bishops scoreless in the second half en route to a 56-21 final.
The Ohio Wesleyan offense was working right away, taking the opening drive 82 yards for a touchdown.
Jordan Bryant capped off the drive with a 30-yard touchdown reception from
C.J. Jackson. The lead was short-lived as DePauw tied it up at 7-7 after a touchdown on their opening drive as well.
OWU jumped back ahead with a 77-yard touchdown drive on their second possession. It was
Jordyn Bailey with the score on a 13-yard reception from Jackson. The Bishops held the lead for the following six possessions, including a turnover on downs and a failed field goal for DePauw.
The Tigers tied it back up and took the lead in the opening moments of the second quarter with back-to-back two-yard touchdown runs. Ohio Wesleyan would not go quietly, scoring another touchdown to make it a 21-21 ballgame with five minutes left in the first half. For the second time, it was Jackson finding Bryant for the score, this time for 27 yards.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the remainder of the game would get. DePauw took back the lead with a fourth touchdown just before the half and proceeded to score 28 unanswered in the second half on the way to the 56-21 final score.
OFFENSIVE NUMBERS
The Red and Black collected 411 yards of total offense with 198 in the air and 213 on the ground. Senior quarterback
C.J. Jackson was 18-for-34 for 198 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also rushed for 12 yards.
Reed Wehr rushed for a career-high 109 yards to lead the Bishops, toting the ball 11 times with a long of 45.
Mysaun Sanders rushed for 63 yards on 14 attempts.
Jordan Bryant was OWU's leading receiver with 101 yards on six catches with two touchdowns.
Jordan Ghant and
Quin Schroeder each recorded 35 yards.
Jordyn Bailey collected 13 yards on two catches with one touchdown.
Drew Burdine was 2-for-2 on extra points.
Stanly Scandell nailed his first career PAT.
DEFENSIVE NUMBERS
DePauw had 537 yards of total offense with 225 through the air and 312 on the ground. The Battling Bishops tallied three sacks and made one interception.
Jacob Slyh (one solo, five assists) and
Braydon Pavlus (four solos, two assists) led the Bishops with six tackles each.
Vicean Sample (four solos),
Jordan Mills (two solos, two assists),
Nadir Langston (three solos, one assist),
Carter Kuhn (one solo, three assists), and
Braxton Ross (one solo, three assists) recorded four tackles each. Kuhn and Ross both had half of a sack.
Connor Stephens (two solos, one assist), Grant Johson (one solo, two assists), and
Lucas Ward (two solos, one assist) had three tackles each. Ward had half of a sack as well.
Miles Theetge recorded a sack.
Roman Morrison recorded half of a sack.
