GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (7-2, 1-1 NCAC) continued their conference schedule on Saturday, traveling to rival Denison (5-2, 2-0 NCAC). The Battling Bishops came in seeking revenge for a 2-1 overtime loss in last season's NCAC Tournament championship game. Unfortunately, history would repeat itself as the Bishops suffered another overtime loss at the hands of the Big Red 1-0.
Ohio Wesleyan spent the majority of the day on the defensive end, sustaining attack after attack from Denison. OWU's defense was up for the challenge, holding the Big Red scoreless in regulation despite facing 17 shots and eight penalty corners. The Battling Bishops were able to push ahead for five shots in regulation, putting two on target but coming up empty, leading to a scoreless tie at the end of 60 minutes.
Denison would score the game-winner in the second minute of overtime, taking the game 1-0.
THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan took five shots, putting two on target. Denison had 18 shots with six on target. The Bishops made five saves compared to two for the Big Red. Denison was awarded eight penalty corners in contrast to one for OWU.
Mary Powers recorded two shots with one on target.
Violette Alcantar was credited with the other shot on goal – her only attempt of the game.
Payton Mindel (7-2) played the full 61:54 and made five saves.
