LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team (3-1, 1-0 NCAC) opened their conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon at Transylvania (0-2, 0-1 NCAC). The Battling Bishops got back in the win column in a big way, scoring OWU's most goals in a single game since the program record of 12 in 1994 and defeating the Pioneers 11-0.
The Red and Black got started right away with a program-record five goals in the first quarter – the most ever in an opening period for the Bishops, and tied for the most in a single quarter.
Grace Ammon netted the first of the game in the fifth minute.
Reagan Shifflett was next in the ninth minute with an assist from
Madeleine Powell. Ammon netted another a minute later in the 10th, followed by
Mary Powers in the 11th, and Violette Alacantar in the 12th, completing a run of four goals in less than four minutes to end the period up 5-0.
From then on out, Ohio Wesleyan added two goals per quarter to bring their final total to 11. In the second quarter it was
Ava Zimmer in the 27th minute and
Abbey Gordon in the 30th – her first career goal. In the third quarter it was Powers with her second in the 33rd minute and Powell in the 41st – her first career goal. Finally, in the fourth quarter it was
Nova Dekker in the 48th minute and
Annabel Fauver in the 60th – her first career goal.
THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan took 21 shots and put 18 on target, holding Transylvania to just one attempt. The Battling Bishops had five penalty corners compared to two for the Pioneers.
Mary Powers and
Grace Ammon scored two goals apiece, bringing their season totals to a team-leading four each.
Violette Alcantar,
Reagan Shifflett,
Ava Zimmer, and
Nova Dekker scored one goal each. Shifflett now has three goals on the season, while Alcantar and Zimmer each have two, and Dekker has one.
Abbey Gordon,
Madeleine Powell, and
Annabel Fauver each recorded their first goal of the season and of their careers.
Payton Mindel (3-1) got the start and the win.
Jane Shields and
Elizabeth Aguirre also saw action, with Aguirre making her collegiate debut.
UP NEXT
The Bishops head to Geneva, New York for two games over the weekend, playing William Smith on Saturday followed by St. Lawrence on Sunday. Both games are set for 10:30 a.m.
