Meet the Bishops: Get to know a little about Ben Whitbourn of the Ohio Wesleyan men's swimming & diving team

Class Year: 2019

Major: Pre-Medicine / Pre-Professional Zoology

How/Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
Originally from the United Kingdom, my college search started with finding a competitive program for me as an athlete. Along with the great athletic program at Ohio Wesleyan, I was attracted to the strong academic programs and large number of opportunities, such as Greek life and other student organizations I have been a part of.

How/Why did you choose your major?
I have always been interested in entering medicine as a career path, and taking classes in the sciences at OWU has encouraged my pursuit further. I hope to enter sports medicine in the future.

What are your plans after graduation?
I plan on attending medical school either back home in the U.K., the U.S., or in the Caribbean. I am currently exploring my options and, if necessary, plan to take a year off.

What is your favorite memory on the Ohio Wesleyan swimming and diving team?
My favorite memory is the 50-yard freestyle swim-off at conference 2017. I had not swum a good race in the heats prior, and to win the swim-off and qualify for finals while my team lined the pool deck was very special.

Is there a specific coach or teammate who has helped you get where you are?
Coach Richard Hawes has helped me the most throughout my three years here, both athletically and academically. All the coaching staff here at OWU have been supportive of my goals and have assisted me when needed. All my teammates are great motivators and we have a tendency to push each other every day in practice.

If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?
Teleportation. I would like the ability to travel anywhere instantly. Travel has been an important aspect of who I am and I would love to travel instantly around the world to understand and observe other cultures and traditions.

Which three people, living or dead, would you like to share a meal with?
David Beckham, Queen Elizabeth, and my Grandad.

What movie or TV show would you like to star on and why?
Peaky Blinders. I think living in that time period would be cool and I'm a big fan of the attire.
