Meet the Bishops:  Get to know a little about Josh Queener of the Ohio Wesleyan men's cross country team.

Name:  Josh Queener

Class year:  Senior

Major:  ACS-Certified Chemistry

How/Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
I chose Ohio Wesleyan because the science programs here are extremely good and really prepare you for the next step after getting your degree. I also chose to come here in part because of the incredible atmosphere of the teams when I came on my visits.

How/Why did you choose your major?
When I was younger, I would watch science videos and read things like National Geographic. I knew I wanted to go into the sciences, but I wasn’t sure what specifically I wanted to do until I took some chemistry classes in high school. I explored some of the other sciences in my first year here, but they just didn’t seem as interesting to me as chemistry, something about discovering and exploring new compounds really appealed to me.

Why did you choose to compete in sports at Ohio Wesleyan?
Sports were such a huge part of my life in high school that I wanted to continue competing as long as I could. I chose to compete at OWU because my high school teams were almost like a family to me and the cross-country and track teams here seemed to embody that. The teams I saw on my visits were super close and competitive in their sport. What really struck me when I was visiting was how close the track team was even between the event groups, even more so than my high school team was.

What are your strengths as an athlete (as an individual)?
Some of my strengths as an athlete are my ability to quickly learn the proper way (form, motion, etc.) to do various exercises and being able to remember most of what we’re supposed to be doing at practice so I can help guide the team better. As an individual, I am very good at time management, so I can stay at practice until everyone has finished and not be stressed about having enough time to finish all my work while also having a part-time job. I also have good interpersonal skills, making it easy for me to effectively communicate with my teammates and coaches.

What is your number one goal, personal or team, for this season?
My number one goal this season is to do my best leading the team, making sure my teammates are staying healthy and doing what they need to be their absolute best when we have our most important meets. I’m also focusing on instilling good habits for the years to come when the other seniors and I graduate.

What are your plans after graduation?
I am planning on going to graduate school and pursuing a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.

If you could visit another time, when would it be and why?
I would travel to ancient Greece and participate in some of the first Olympic games.
