I felt like I could really tailor my education to what I wanted it to be while still playing the sport I love...

Meet the Bishops:  Get to know a little about Rachel Leslie of the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey team.

Name:  Rachel Leslie

Class year:  Freshman

Major:  Mathematics and Spanish

How/Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
I knew I wanted to play field hockey in college, and I was only interested in Division III. From there, I looked at small liberal arts colleges because I wanted small class sizes and the ability to explore all my interests without feeling limited. What really sold me on OWU was the team atmosphere and the supportive coaches as well as the academic opportunities with the Theory-to-Practice grants and study-abroad options. I felt like I could really tailor my education to what I wanted it to be while still playing the sport I love.

How/Why did you choose your major?
That one was easy. In high school, I loved math and Spanish. I looked forward to those classes the most and could spend hours doing either. I am not 100 percent sure what I want to do with these majors, but I know it will turn out okay because they are both things I could do for the rest of my life in any capacity.

Why did you chose to compete in sports at Ohio Wesleyan?
I feel that sports teach us so many lessons. Through field hockey, I learned how to communicate effectively, work with people even when we aren’t getting along, deal with failure, and so much more. By playing a sport, I constantly put myself in situations where I need to stretch and grow as a person. That is something I definitely wanted to continue to do in college. Of course, the built-in friends don’t hurt, either.

How/Why did you chose to stick to your current sport?
I loved field hockey so much I literally could not imagine not playing. I had so much fun and dedicated so much time to improving over the last four years in high school, I just had to keep going.

What is your number one goal, personal or team, for this season?
Make the NCAC tournament and then win it!!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Proficiency/fluency in every language

What is your theme song?
“All I Do is Win” by DJ Khalid

What is your ideal travel destination?
Cross-country road trip! I want to visit every state and see all the national parks.

Early bird or night owl?
Night owl!
