DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University women's soccer team hosted No. 3 Christopher Newport on Sunday for their final match of the OWU Classic. The Battling Bishops spent much of the afternoon on the defensive, but held the third-ranked Captains to two goals. On the other end, OWU struggled to put together offensive pushes, getting just three scoring chances and scoring just once off of an olimpico from freshman
Bailey Hawkins, resulting in a 2-1 final in favor of the visitors.
Ohio Wesleyan slips to 3-2-2 on the season. Christopher Newport remains undefeated at 5-0-1.
CNU struck first in the 38th minute after Hanna Heaton sent a free kick over the wall and into the upper left corner. The Captains added another in the second half – 72nd minute – when Katy Bronski scored following a throw in from Addy Hennessy, making it 2-0.
The Bishops got one back just five minutes later in the 77th after being awarded a corner kick. Freshman
Bailey Hawkins – making her collegiate debut – took the kick, sending it curling into the upper right corner of the net for her first career shot and her first career goal. In the end, that would be the only goal of the afternoon for OWU, leaving the score at 2-1 after 90 minutes.
THE NUMBERS
Bailey Hawkins scored the first goal of her career, on her only shot of the game.
Paige Neal was the only other Bishop to get a shot off, taking two.
Natalie Ryan (3-2-2) got the start and played the first 72 minutes making eight saves.
Payton Beard came in to play the remainder of the game, making a career-high four saves.
