DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University volleyball team (0-1, 0-0 NCAC) hosted Heidelberg (1-0, 0-0 OAC) for its season-opener on Tuesday night. The Battling Bishops took a 1-0 lead to start, but ultimately fell 3-1 after conceding the next three sets.
OWU grabbed the early advantage with a 25-17 win in set one. The Bishops dropped in 14 kills led by
Natalie Dieball with five and
Jordanne Shannon with four. Heidelberg eventually evened the score with a 25-18 victory in set two.
The Red and Black looked keen to take back a 2-1 lead with a 20-14 lead in set three, however Heidelberg battled back to take it in extra points 27-25. Ohio Wesleyan would end up falling too far behind in set four, conceding the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
THE NUMBERS
The Battling Bishops tallied 49 kills led by
Natalie Dieball with 16,
Mason Campbell with 13, and
Jordanne Shannon with 10.
There were three service aces in the game for the Red and Black, recorded by
Avery Krause,
Abby Nulph, and
Taylor Tompkins.
OWU had the upper hand at the net with 11 blocks to Heidelberg's 10.
Abby Nulph nabbed six followed by Shannon with four and Campbell with three.
Jenna Ashbrook and
Jaelyn Taylor took over the primary setting responsibilities, recording 40 combined assists. Ashbrook collected 21 and Taylor collected 19.
Krause led the digging division with 26 digs, followed by Ashbrook and Dieball both with 12. The trio combined for 50 of the Bishops' 83 total.
UP NEXT
OWU will be back in action on Friday night, hosting Capital for day one of the Wittenberg Fall Classic. That match is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
