TURIN, Italy – The Ohio Wesleyan University football team started their summer across the Atlantic Ocean, embarking on a weeklong adventure in Italy that featured sightseeing in Rome, Vatican City, Tuscany, Siena, the Italian coastline, southern Switzerland, Como, and Milan, as well as a training session in Florence and an exhibition game in Turin.
The Battling Bishops arrived in Rome Flumicino International Airport on Monday and headed to the city center for lunch and a walking tour of the center of the ancient Roman Empire and a trip to the Roman Colosseum. Tuesday featured more sightseeing in Rome and a trip to Vatican City that featured a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and a visit to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica.
The Bishops departed Rome on Wednesday and traveled to see beautiful Tuscany in the morning before stopping for lunch and a guided tour of Siena. In the evening, the Red and Black continued on to the relaxing town of Montecatini Terme just west of Florence. The Battling Bishops spent Thursday morning in Florence, practicing at the facility of Guelfi Firenze – the reigning champions of the Italian Football League (IFL). After that, the Bishops were free to explore the city of Florence for the rest of the day, including a guided tour of the "Birthplace of the Renaissance" and an authentic Tuscan dinner before returning to Montecatini.
The Red and Black wrapped up the week with an excursion up the western Italian coastline, leaving from La Spezia train station and traveling to the colorful "Five Lands" – the five authentic Italian seaside villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riamaggiore – before settling in Bra for the evening. Saturday was gameday for the Battling Bishops as they headed to Turin for a joint training session and an exhibition game with the IFL's Giaguari Torino. Afterwards, the Bishops departed for Saronno, just outside of Milan.
The Battling Bishops started their final day with a trip across the border to Lugano – a cultural and financial hub in southern Switzerland, nestled on the shores of Lake Lugano and surrounded by the Pre-Alps. There, the Bishops had a brief walking tour with a Swiss guide before stopping for lunch and Swiss chocolates. The Red and Black would return to northern Italy for the remainder of the day, embarking on a tour of the medieval city of Como, before concluding the trip with a festive farewell dinner at
Birrificio di Como, and returning to Milan for some rest prior to departure from Milan Malpensa Airport in the morning.
