I chose Ohio Wesleyan for the connections with top-tier engineering colleges once I graduate.

Name:  Madison Cofer

Class Year:  2025

Major:  Biomedical engineering

Why did you choose Ohio Wesleyan?
I chose Ohio Wesleyan for the connections with top-tier engineering colleges once I graduate.  The 3-2/4-2 program allows me to compete at the collegiate level in soccer while also meeting my academic pursuits.

Why did you choose your major?
The medical field always interested me, but I definitely could not handle the constant life-or-death pressure.  With biomedical engineering, it allows me to still help people with their health but in a more indirect way.  Surgical devices such as the Da Vinci Surgical System allow doctors/surgeons to help people better/safer/less invasive than ever before; high-tech prosthetics are being developed to help change the lives of so many amputees. To be able to be a part of that community would be an honor.

What is your favorite memory on an Ohio Wesleyan team?
I'm stuck between when I scored my first collegiate goal off of a corner kick from Holly Counts and we ran at each other and gave each other a bear hug or during our Ohio Northern game when a ONU player flopped and our keeper Taylor Floyd on the sidelines just threw herself on the ground to copy what it looked like.

Do you have any pre-event rituals or superstitions?
I wear two pairs of socks when I play.  Every time.  If I don't double sock, I play badly.

How did your position/What do you like best about your position?
I love my position as center back.  I didn't exactly pick it, though.  When I was younger, I was primarily a midfielder and played as the defensive mid.  But obviously I'm tall, and as a very tall individual my club coach threw me back there one game and I haven't switched since.  My position has allowed me to get really good at reading the game and seeing options both for my own team attacking and defensively, knowing where people need to be so we aren't countered.

Which three people, living or dead, would you like to share a meal with?
The first people that shoot straight into my mind are my grandma on my dad's side and my friend Abby Coning from high school.  Both passed suddenly and I would love nothing more than to get to sit and talk to them one more time.

What is your ideal travel destination?
Somewhere peaceful and quiet by a small body of water like a lake, no ocean, the ocean is scary.  But somewhere quiet in a cabin by a lake where I can sit and enjoy the silence.
